Description: This is a striking photographic portrait of Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948), who while still serious, looks more relaxed and genial than he typically does in formal portraits. The lower left corner has the blindstamp of photographic firm "Harris & Ewing, Washington D.C."
Hughes inscribed the photograph to Ashmun Brown, journalist and president of the Gridiron Club: "To Mr. Ashmun Brown, With Cordial Regards Charles E. Hughes Feb. 25, 1925" in the blank lower margin. The date is less than two weeks before Hughes left office as Secretary of State. The photograph is archivally matted to 17 3/4" x 14 1/4"; the sight measures 11 7/8" x 8 3/8". Item #A00374
