Description: This cabinet photo shows two standing, bearded Toda Indians holding spears and shrouded in large swathes of cloth. The Toda people live in the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu in Southern India.
On the card beneath the photo is the address for Charles Eisenmann’s studio at 229 Bowery, New York and the typewritten words: “Todas. Indians.”
Pencil writing on the verso reads: “Todas Indian From Nulgherry [Nilgiri] Mountains East India – Name Patho”. Item #P00131
The verso also bears the backmark of Charles Eisenmann’s New York studio. Eisenmann made a career of photographing “oddities,” using poses, settings, lighting, etc. similar to those which he used for the rest of his clientele.
Condition: Small speck above spear in upper blank area of photo, minor foxing on verso, otherwise in very good condition.
