Description: Famed English actor Basil Rathbone (1892-1967) signed the back of a blank Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company form to a young fan: “To Cheryl Barbara Best wishes Basil Rathbone”.
Rathbone was a Shakespearean stage actor who went on to appear in over 70 films, frequently portraying villains or morally ambiguous characters. Some of his notable roles include Mr. Murdstone in David Copperfield (1935), Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and of course, Sherlock Holmes in the fourteen films made between 1939 and 1946.
Information in the accompanying letter indicates that Cheryl’s father worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and when he encountered Rathbone on one of the trains, he asked him to sign an autograph for his fourteen year old daughter.
