Description: American poet Edwin Markham (1852-1940) signed the back of this March 5, 1917 check made out to him for one dollar and fifty cents by N. Gail Davis. The check is drawn on the First National Bank of South Bend, Indiana.
 
Edwin Markham was Poet Laureate of Oregon from 1923-1931. His most famous poem, “The Man with the Hoe” highlighted the difficult lives of laborers and was inspired by the French painting of the same name by artist Jean-Francois Millet. Markham’s poem “Lincoln, Man of the People” was selected out of 250 entries to be recited at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922.
