Arthur Compton is known for discovering a change in wave length of scattered X rays, known as the Compton effect, which demonstrated the particle concept of electromagnetic radiation, for which he was awarded the 1927 Nobel prize for physics. He is also remembered for his participation in the Manhattan Project (1942-1946), the research and development effort that produced the first nuclear weapons.
