Oakie is best remembered for his role as Benzino Napaloni in Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 film The Great Dictator, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He appeared in 87 films, acted on Broadway and television, and had his own radio show in the 1930’s. He was known for his frequent use of double-takes, for refusing to wear on-screen make-up, and for his masterful comedic timing.
