Description: Nelson Rockefeller (1908-1979) signed this typed letter to Dr. T. Norman Hurd on December 10, 1975 while he was serving as Vice President. In the letter, Rockefeller sincerely thanks “Norm” for his “critical role in the work of the [President’s Panel on Federal Compensation] and in the direction and encouragement of the staff.”
A hand-written post-script reads: “P.S. We’re off next week to Mauna Kau (sp?) for Christmas & will be in touch with you then – very best.”
Nelson Rockefeller was Governor of New York (1959-1973) and Vice President of the United States (1974-1977) under Gerald Ford. Rockefeller is remembered for being a rather liberal Republican. As Governor of New York, he expanded the State University of New York, made strides to protect the environment, created the NYS Council on the Arts, and increased facilities for medical care. The letter's recipient, T. Norman Hurd, had served as Budget Director during Rockefeller's terms as Governor of New York.
