Description

Description: American author Anya Seton (1904-1990) typed and signed this friendly letter to one of her fans, Mrs. Lloyd R. Knauss of Poughkeepsie, New York on October 2, 1968. Mrs. Knauss had asked about any reproductions of the signatures of Katherine or John, two of the historical figures Seton wrote about in her famous novel, Katherine (1954). She writes, "I combed the British Museum quite carefully and do not think that they have anything that personal relating to those two. Remember all the fires, all the indifference and all the moves which make such specific discoveries almost impossible!" Katherine tells the story of two fourteenth century British figures, Katherine Swynford (c. 1350-1403), the mistress and later wife of John of Gaunt (1340-1399), Duke of Lancaster. Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt were direct ancestors of the Tudors, the Stuarts, and the modern British Royal Family.

Anya Seton was the daughter of American naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946). She was known for extensively researching her historical romances, which she preferred to call "biographical novels". Katherine, Green Darkness, and The Winthrop Woman are three of her most popular novels and are considered classics in their genres. Two other novels, Dragonwyck and Foxfire were made into films.
