|Description: American modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham (1894-1991) boldly signed this program for a performance of Seraphic Dialogue, Circe, and Legend of Judith. Martha Graham (and her Dance Company) performed these three dances in Syracuse, NY for the Famous Artists Series presented by Murray Bernthal and S. Hurok in 1966.
Martha Graham reshaped modern dance during her seventy-year career. She focused on stripping away the decorative, weightless movements of ballet to create movements that were grounded in the realm of human experience. She was the first dancer to perform at the White House, as well as the first to travel as a cultural ambassador. She received numerous honors, including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Key to the City of Paris, and Japan's Imperial Order of the Precious Crown.
