Description: Richard Cardinal Cushing (1895-1970) signed this First Day Cover which celebrates the introduction of a 5 cent stamp commemorating the recently assassinated President John F. Kennedy. The stamp features an image of a candle flame and a portrait of JFK surrounded by the words: "And the glow from that fire can truly light the world. 1917 John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1963." There is a large color portrait of Kennedy on the left side of the envelope and a Boston circular cancellation stamp dated May 29, 1964 in the middle.
RIchard Cushing was the Archbishop of Boston from 1944 to 1970. He presided over John F. Kennedy's marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier (1953) as well as his funeral (1963). Cushing was made a Cardinal in 1958.
