Description: We offer an oil on canvas by the German born artist Philipp Weichberger (1936-1985). The painting is signed at the top right and dated 63(?). The stretcher size is 24" x 30" and it is housed in a period slat frame with a gold face. Visual associations speed by in this retrofuturist composition: suspension cables, turbines, gears, classical Greek architecture, flying buttresses and space travel. Weichberger's technique of scraping paint away is at once sculptural and calligraphic.
Born in Germany in 1936, Weichberger moved to New York City in 1965. His work was exhibited in the Biennales of Tokyo and Paris, and the "Salon Comparaisons" at the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris. Weichberger took his life in 1985 by jumping off the top of the 13th story of the Westbeth Artists' Community in Manhattan. Item #FA00087.
