Description: Wiley Blount Rutledge (1894-1949) sent this Christmas card to Madelyn Miller, manager of the Supreme Court cafeteria with his thanks “for many kindnesses and best wishes for 1945.”
Rutledge was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1943 to replace the significantly more conservative James F. Byrnes. Rutledge had previously served on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Includes original envelope that has a pencil identification of the recipient. Card measures 4 ¼” x 3 ½”. 4 ¼” x 7” when open and has a block print of a winter scene through a window. Item #A01081.
Condition: Very good condition with a large, clear signature.
