Description: German physicist Marcello Pirani (1880-1968) typed and signed this brief note to a Dr. Hull wishing him a happy new year. Pirani is known for his invention of a vacuum gauge (the Pirani gauge) that measures the pressure dependence of heat loss. He also made pioneering contributions to the field of gas-discharge lamps. At the time this letter was sent, Pirani was "Direktor der Studiengesellschaft fur Elecktrische Beleuchtung" at the Osram Company.
