Description: Famed conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) scribbled his signature, in his typical fashion, at the bottom of this kind letter to a young fan in 1923. He says, “I am glad you like the ‘Hunters’ Chorus’ from ‘Der Freischutz’… Please tell your friends about our concerts. I would like them to come too.” He also mentions a musical competition. “At tomorrow’s concert I shall read out…the number of votes received for each composition, and the one receiving the greatest number will be on the programme.”
Stokowski is best known for his free-hand conducting style, his long tenure at the Philadelphia Orchestra, and for appearing in Disney’s Fantasia.
