Description: Jose Cipriano Castro Ruiz (1858-1924) was a military strongman who amassed a fortune in illegal cattle trading. In 1899 he recruited a private army which marched on Caracas and he installed himself as supreme military leader. He assumed the presidency in 1904 and ruled for the next seven years, an era of political turmoil.
We offer a partial steamship passenger list cover which he has signed and dated February 25, 1913. At this time he was essentially in exile, a status he would continue to have until his death in Puerto Rico in 1924.
The card stock cover measures 4 1/4" x 3 1/4". In another hand someone has identified the signature as: "General C. Castro". Item #A00823.
Condition: Light soil, otherwise very good.
