Description: This New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company pass for the year 1905 is signed by the Chairman of the Board of the company, Chauncey Depew (1834-1928).
Depew’s illustrious career in railroads began in 1866 when he became an attorney for the New York & Harlem Railroad. Three years later he took the same position for the New York Central Hudson River Railroad. His talent for the job was recognized and he was elected president in 1885, serving until 1898, when he then became chairman of the board of directors of the New York Central Railroad Company. Depew also served as a U.S. Senator from New York from 1899-1911.
This pass probably belonged to J. B. Lyon (misprinted “Lyons”) of the Albany printing company, known for producing such publications as the Apples of New York and the annual reports of New York State’s Forest, Fish and Game Commission.
