Description: Two years before his death, James G. Blaine (1830-1893) signed this letter to the “Diplomatic and Consular Officers of the United States”, introducing “the Hon. B. B. Thatcher, of Bangor, Maine, who, accompanied by his wife and daughter, is making an extended tour through Europe.”
 
James G. Blaine had a long political career, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, was U.S. Secretary of State under two different presidents and ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1884.
 
The body of the letter is not written in Blaine’s hand. Written on one side of a folded sheet of paper that measures 10” x 16” when unfolded. The paper is watermarked "Department of State US" on both sides. Item #A00832.
 
Condition: Fold lines and toning around edges, otherwise in very good condition.
