Description: Former First Lady of the United States, Lucretia Garfield (1832-1918) penned her tidy signature on this envelope addressed to Messrs. Brush Moore & Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. There are two circular cancellation postmarks on the envelope: one from West Mentor, Ohio on the recto, the other from Cleveland, Ohio on the verso. The West Mentor stamp doesn’t have a readable date but the Cleveland one is dated 1890.
Lucretia Garfield was the wife of the 20th President of the United States, James Garfield (1831-1881), who was shot four months into his term and died from his wounds about two and a half months afterwards.
Black-bordered mourning stationery envelope was neatly opened by slicing off the right edge. It measures: 3 3/8” x 4”. Item #A00869.
Condition: Some wrinkling and minor smudging, otherwise in very good condition.
