Description: Alonzo B. Cornell (1832-1904) served as New York Governor from 1880-1882.

In this three-page autograph letter signed to General Frederick Townsend he expresses the difficulty "to find a satisfactory artist who would undertake the work for the sum named." Two years prior, the Common Council of the City of Albany appropriated $1000 for his official portrait.
