Description: The “Father of the American Cartoon” Thomas Nast (1840-1902) scrawled his signature: “Th: Nast”, and the date, May 30, 1878, on this 3 1/8” x 4 ½” piece of paper. Item #A01031.
Nast is best remembered for the now iconic images of Santa Claus and Republican elephant. Though he didn’t actually create the images of Uncle Sam, or the Democratic donkey, he is credited for popularizing them through his art. His lengthy run as illustrator for Harper's Weekly (1859-1860 and 1862-1886) had a major impact on the politics and culture of the late 19th century.
Condition: Card is toned, has a few errant marks, otherwise in very good condition with a bold signature.
