|Description: We offer an expertly executed oil painting on board (17 ½” x 13 ½”) by Gottfried Frohe, signed at the bottom right corner: "1876 G. Frohe," and housed in a fine gilt frame with acorn compo accents (27” x 23”). Frohe depicts an epic nativity scene with the three wise men bearing gifts to the baby Jesus amongst grand ruins all dramatically lit from above. Item #FA00154.
Gottfried Frohe was born in Holland in 1827 and immigrated to the United States in 1861. He was the father of four children, including Leo Petrus (b. 1851), the manager of the Buffalo Stained Glass Works. Many of his children were also involved in the ecclesiastical arts. Gottfried Frohe painted murals and paintings for churches and held a patent for a technique related to painting on velvet banners. He died in 1908.
Condition: There are about a dozen small spots of what appears to be inpainting clustered around the figures and a fair amount of craquelure. The frame has scattered faint cracks and some worn areas in the gilding.
