Description: We offer a scarce autograph of Confederate General Ambrose Powell Hill, Jr [A. P. Hill] who was killed in action at the third Battle of Petersburg on April 2, 1865.

This clipped endorsement (from a larger document) was signed exactly one year prior to his death. It states: "Head Qtrs. 3rd Army Corps. 2nd April 1864 Rec. forwarded & recommended A P Hill Leut. GenL".

In May of 1863 Hill was promoted to lieutenant General and placed in command of the newly created Third Corps of Lee's Army just prior to their participation in the Battle of Gettysburg.

Slip of ruled paper measures: 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". Archivally matted with period steel engraved portrait to: 15" x 10". Item #A01073

Condition: Paper loss at left corner [does not affect signature] has been backed by similar paper, otherwise good condition with clear signature and rank.
