Description

Description: We offer an 1848 lithographed view of New York City from Valentine's Manual by G. Hayward, based on the iconic birdseye view by William Burgis, which was published in 1721. The image is 6 ⅛” X 18 ¾”, printed on ivory paper (8 ⅝” x 19 ⅞”) and hand colored with pale blue in the sky and water. The original Burgis copy is 6' 6" in length and 28" wide. Item #PR00219. This image is based on the view by Thomas Bakewell, who added various buildings to the skyline of the view created by Burgis in 1719. Some architectural liberties have been taken to squeeze in the new buildings, so the effect is not entirely accurate. The wonky layering conveys New York City's constant state of flux. Over the next decade the population of the city will double, and more buildings and bridges and people would be squeezed in. Condition: There are four vertical creases from being bound in a book, as issued, the lower right corner has a bent corner and the paper is lightly frayed at the creases, overall good presentable condition.
