Description: William Gladstone (1809-1898) boldly signed this 1846 printed circular requesting that “Medical Certificates” be submitted to the Executive Council prior to granting a Leave of Absence “on account of ill-health, to any Public Functionary”. The document was sent to one of the British colonies while Gladstone was serving as Colonial Secretary (1845-1846) under Prime Minister Robert Peel.
William Gladstone (1809-1898) served as the UK's Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer four times each, between 1853 and 1894. He is remembered as a great orator, in addition to his legacies as "the great financial authority of our country" and as "the father of", and a devoted promoter of, Irish Home Rule.
