Description: We offer a hand-colored lithograph from James Audubon’s The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (1845-48), produced by J.T. Bowen. Ursus Maritimus, Polar Bear, Male is printed on thick ivory wove paper that is 21 ½” x 27 ½”, trimmed just along the binding edge. Item #PR00170. John James Audubon (1785 – 1851), born Jean-Jacques Audubon, was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827–1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon identified 25 new species. Condition: There are a few spots of foxing in the image, two 1” tears along the lower blank margin, light soil on the left blank margin and remnants of adhesive tape along the top margin on verso. Generally good condition and very presentable when matted.
