Description: British statesman Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) scrawled and signed this brief note to W. N. Glover, thanking him for his “letter of the 26[th] and its enclosure”.
Palmerston’s almost 50-year political career began in 1807 when he became a Member of Parliament for the Tory Party. He served as Secretary at War from 1809 to 1828, Foreign Secretary for three non-consecutive terms between 1830 and 1851, became Home Secretary in 1852, and served as Prime Minister (1855-1858 and 1859-1865) until his death. Palmerston is remembered for his deft handling of crises, his progressive domestic policies, and his commitment to advancing the interests of England in foreign matters.
