Description: Armand-Emmanuel Sophie Septimanie de Vignerot du Plessis, 5th Duke of Richelieu and Fronsac (1766-1822) penned and signed this brief, friendly letter thanking his correspondent, “Monsieur le Comte d’Aguin”, for his letter and the copy of the “odes” that he had dedicated to “S. M.”
 
Richelieu was a French statesman who emigrated during the French Revolution to Russia where he served as governor of Odessa (1803-1814) and of the Crimea (1805). Following the Bourbon Restoration, Richelieu returned to France and served as Prime Minister of France under King Louis XVIII for two terms (1815-1818 and 1820-1821).
 
Written in French on a sheet of 7 ¾” x 7 ¼” paper. Item #A00856.
 
Condition: Fold lines, paper loss at upper edge and left margin due to hasty opening of sealed missive (with loss of a few letters of date), otherwise in good condition with dark, legible script and a neat signature.
