Description: James Duane (1733-1797), one of the delegates to the 1774 Continental Congress and the 44th Mayor of New York City, boldly signed this 1788 manuscript document concerning payment to a coroner “for inquests taken on dead bodies”.
Duane was a Revolutionary leader from New York whose illustrious political career also included serving as a state senator and a U.S. District Judge. Duane was a signatory of the Continental Association and the Articles of Confederation as well.
